Nursing Home Ministry Call

My name is Javin Colm Alec Calvert, and I have a nursing home ministry call. I am a member of a family of eight. I have wanted to start ministering so I can do something special for the elderly people at nursing homes. The elderly are the ones who have inspired me to minister for a career, as well as my mother. I have been interacting with the elderly for a long time; as a matter of fact, my best friend was 91 years old. Her name was Esther, and she got me attached to nursing homes during the years that she was still alive.

Elderly people are a way that God uses to speak to me. Not many elderly folks can leave a nursing home if they have to live in one. I believe God has given me a nursing home ministry call so the people who live there can have a church service and a prayer time. My mom has also encouraged me to go into the ministry. I have two uncles who preach, and I have a grandpa who is retiring from it.

I have known about Christ for a long time, but I did not truly think about learning more until Uncle Isaac started a youth group. He did some great teaching during the years he ran the youth group. I had not totally accepted Christ until one year when Uncle Isaac took the youth group on a trip to a church camp in North Carolina. It was there that I accepted Christ and joined the army of God. Many good things have happened since that time. I have been able to survive the trouble that I have to handle with epilepsy that I have had since I was born.

I have still had trouble dealing with epilepsy, but there have been ways that God has used to help me. For example, people like my parents or my friends at church, like my friend Cheryl. God also used a movie called Facing The Giants to help me discover my favorite verse of the Bible, Revelations 3:7-8: “These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David, what he opens no one can shut and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds behold I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know you have a little strength yet you have kept my word, and have not denied my name.”

God can use anything or anyone to speak to you. Mom was the one who helped me find Christian Leaders Institute, and so far it has been a good thing for me. My mom has been helping me know what the role of a Christian leader is and these classes at CLI are helping me as well. God has used them to inspire me to go into ministering to the elderly.
