My name is Michele Updike. I live in the United States. I am a happily married mother of two beautiful teenage daughters. Fiercely called to Ministry, I am currently enrolled in the free starter courses at the Christian Leaders Institute (Learn more about studying the Bible online, Click Here) to enroll in CLI’s Leadership Excellence School to obtain a Bachelor’s in Ministry.
My Childhood
My childhood was ideal; my great-aunt and uncle raised me. We attended church regularly. Our pastor was terrific! My aunt was in poor health. When she could not participate in services, Pastor would record his sermons. He brought them to the house to listen to them with her and pray with her. Baptized in her adult years, it was shortly before her untimely passing.
My aunt died when I was 11, leaving my brother and me to be cared for by my mother. My paternal father was never in the picture. We stayed in the home we always lived in. After that, however, life was dramatically different. We no longer attended church. There was no discipline. My brother started skipping school. I fell into a deep state of despair.
A year later, my great-uncle died, leaving us homeless. We moved into a trailer without heat, hot water, indoor plumbing, or a front door. We lived there for a year and ate nothing but corn mush. I fell deeper into despair, and my brother became increasingly angry and hateful.
Troubled Times
Finally, my mother moved us to New York State, where the welfare system was more forgiving. We had subsidized housing and food stamps. Unfortunately, my mother’s habits superseded her desire to feed her family. Therefore, we were left hungry once again. We were frequently left homeless and eating from dumpsters. I turned my back on my faith and became angry and hateful. After dropping out of school at 16, I started working to help support the family. My brother did the same when he turned 16. Our lives didn’t change that much, so I moved out at 18.
The pattern of homelessness and hunger followed me until I met my husband at 25. I was homeless when we met. He offered me a place to stay. He was the rock that I needed in my life. A solid foundation to build my life on, to build my faith on. He taught me to love myself. He taught me to respect myself as he respected me. Even though he grew up with an abusive father, he was the kindest, gentlest, most forgiving man. It was his faith in God that made him this way. I wanted to have the same peace within myself. His faith was a beacon of light in the darkness of my soul. We married two years later. Three years after marrying, we had our first daughter. A year and a half later, our second daughter arrived.
Faith and Family
As they grew older, it became more and more important to me to get back to the church, my faith, and a walk with God. We enrolled both girls in a private Christian school. I attended mass regularly. However, it was foreign and alien to me as I grew up Methodist. As the school leaned more and more toward a public school curriculum and ideals, and my oldest daughter was being bullied, I pulled them from private school. I chose to homeschool them with a Christian-based curriculum. We continued in our faith, and both girls excelled academically and spiritually.
A friend of mine invited me to her church, a mega-church. We regularly attended for about a year. Their youth program was beautiful, and our daughters enjoyed it. But finding fellowship in such a massive group of people wasn’t easy. We never even met our pastor in person!
While checking yard sales with my girls one summer day, I met the pastor of a small local, non-denominational church. He invited us to visit. It took us over a year to finally attend. But it was precisely what we had been searching for. The fellowship, the warmth, and the outpouring of love were amazing. So for the past three years, we attended and served in the church.
Answering God’s Call: Bachelor’s in Ministry
In January of this year, my mother died suddenly. We had a complicated relationship. We had more of a sisterly relationship. There were things left unspoken and unresolved. I began spending more and more time with my Bible, my pastor, and my sisters from church. Revelation 21:1-5 spoke to me. Knowing I would be with my mother again one day, in a perfect world, walking with God in the flesh, comforted met. I spent more and more time praying and meditating on God’s Word.
Finally, I answered the call that had been in my heart for years. Therefore, I am eager to enroll at CLI as I work toward a Bachelor’s in Ministry. With a Bachelor’s in Ministry, I can take my next steps in answering God’s call.

My name is Jay Smith. I am getting a tuition-free biblically based education online at the Christian Leaders Institute (Learn more about studying the Bible online, Click Here).
My Background
I’m from a small town called Port McNeill, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. I grew up there with my parents and two siblings. Now, I live in Blenheim, ON, Canada.
How I Came to Know Christ
I was 12 years old and remember asking Jesus into my heart in the middle of my living room with my Pastor. However, I do not remember what made me decide. I guess it just seemed natural and right. Best decision I ever made.
My Journey and My Wife
Heavily involved in my church when I was younger, I practically lived in the youth group. I participated in church plays which turned into major productions for the community. Further, I loved going to church and being on fire for Jesus. However, I grew up in a Pentecostal church where it was all about feelings and the moving of the Spirit through tongues and prophesy. I don’t remember getting much biblical training. Therefore, I lacked discipline and motivation.
After I moved out of my parent’s house at 20 years of age, I drifted and floundered. I did not really belong and got somewhat involved with the world. I dated on and off throughout my twenties and early thirties. However, nothing came of any of the relationships. Then, one day, I finally found my wife Amanda and her then-7-year-old daughter Evah. It was in 2017 at the age of 37. We met online and then married in June 2018. They have been a wonderful blessing to me and I thank God for them every day.
My Focus and Calling
Throughout my entire Christian walk, I always felt a call to some type of ministry. However, I was too focused on wanting to hear a booming voice to tell me what to do or where to go. Therefore, I missed what was right in front of me. I always had a passion for fighting against injustice and sharing and preaching the gospel. I had some opportunities when I was younger to preach, but honestly, I was way too immature, poorly educated biblically, and lacked ministry training as well. Since I married and planted myself in a Bible-teaching church, I’m more grounded and focused on God and obeying His ways. The call to ministry is stronger, and now I need to respond to that call.
A Biblically Based Education at CLI
I am so glad that my wife found CLI. Now, I can pursue a biblically based education at my own pace, free of cost, and on my time. I am looking at chaplaincy and restorative justice. As I pursue these things, I believe God will give me direction for my life and for my ministry. Thank you, CLI team.

My name is Arlene Douglas. I am from St. Mary, Jamaica. The online Bible study opportunity blesses me at the Christian Leaders Institute (Learn more about studying the Bible online, Click Here).
My Spiritual Journey
I am a retired Early Childhood educator from St. Mary, Jamaica. I have over 20 years of teaching experience. However, my passion for serving the Lord has always been a constant in my life. A committed Christian for over 45 years, it was a seed planted from an early age. I grew up in Portland, Jamaica, with my parents and 17 siblings. Attending church and participating in family devotions was a must. My mom was baptized while she was pregnant with me. Her faith helped shape my own, and this also made me feel like a special child.
While attending a crusade at the New Testament Assembly in Hope Bay, Portland, I felt called to serve the Lord. I made the decision to follow Him. Since then, I have served in various ministries. I started as a member of the NTA. Later, I became secretary of the youth department, a member of the youth choir, and a member of the Heaven Bound Singers praise and worship team. After moving to St Mary, I became a member of the NTA Hamilton Mountain. I served as secretary for the youth group and later served as Children’s Director at the local and national levels.
In August 1985, I met my husband at a convocation in St Mary. We married in August 1987. We have three adult children and two grandchildren.
Online Bible Study Opportunity at CLI
My passion for souls led me to continue working in ministry, ministering to people on the streets and in their homes. The leaders appointed me as a minister in the office of a missionary and later ordained me as a minister.
My vision now is to broaden my knowledge of the Word of God. That is why I chose to study at the Christian Leaders Institute after my associate pastor encouraged me to check out CLI. I have more time to share the Word of God with others and focus on self-improvement. The hands of God are on my life. I share the Word of God with others so that they can also be a part of the Kingdom of God. It is my desire to fulfill the great commission given to us by Jesus Christ.
I thank CLI for this online Bible study opportunity and its mission to prepare competent servants of God. I pray that God continues to bless this noble institution.
