Texas Bible Ministry Training Story
My Name is Victoria Fleming
I am currently following my calling to minister to those struggling with addiction. I reside in Texas, but I was born in New Jersey and raised in upstate New York. I am the mother of a son, Jonathan, and a daughter, Mariah, who are the light of my life.
Growing up, I was raised in two different churches—Catholic and Serbian Orthodox. However, I never truly understood what it meant to walk with the Lord; I only knew of God and Jesus. My grandparents were very devoted and instilled faith in my heart.
My Earlier Years
As I entered my teenage years, I lost sight of who God was and His importance in my life. I only went to church with my grandparents on Easter, attended Midnight Mass, and went to the Orthodox church on Serbian Easter. My parents were not very dedicated to Christ—my mom only attended on Easter, and my father brought us to church on his weekends, but it was inconsistent. We never discussed the Bible, Jesus, or God.
In my mid-20s, my life took a dark turn when I became addicted to pills. Everything spiraled quickly, leading me down a path I never expected. It was only in my most desperate moments that I called out to God, but I would quickly turn away again.
In 2010, I entered rehab and reconnected with God. For the first time in my life, I became dependent on Him. Whenever I would vent or complain to my counselor, he would tell me to go pray. I always told him that I had, but he would then ask if I had prayed on my knees. That simple act changed my faith. I began to build my foundation on God alone.
After completing my program, I enrolled in a university to pursue a degree in psychology. I wanted to help others who had lived a story like mine. However, halfway through my studies, I was locked out of my classes due to an issue with my financial aid. Unable to gather the money needed to continue, I became angry with God. I couldn’t understand why He was holding me back from succeeding.
I didn’t trust the Lord’s plan for my life. At the time, I thought my goal was noble—I wanted to help others. However, I was focused more on my own disappointments than on His purpose. My anger led me to a darker place than I had been before recovery.
Two years later, I was incarcerated. I lost my best friend, Caeli, to an overdose. I was afraid of where my life was headed. While in prison, many people claimed they had found God and promised never to use drugs again after their release. I couldn’t do either.
Halfway through my sentence, a ministry woman came in to teach Celebrate Recovery. A few classes in, I learned that she had known my best friend, Caeli. That moment was a turning point—I knew it was God. I was reunited with Him once more.
My True Spiritual Journey Begins
In 2018, I moved to Texas to find stable employment and provide for my children. During this time, I met my now-husband, Paul. He started taking me to church, but at first, I felt so awkward during worship. It was nothing like I had ever experienced, and I would try hard to arrive late just to miss worship.
Now, I find myself worshiping in my car on my way to work!
A True Test of Faith
When my daughter was diagnosed with cancer in 2020, I thought I would fall apart. I was suffocating in fear and grief. For a moment, I became angry with God again.
But I had to realize: God did not give my child cancer—but He could heal her.
That moment humbled me before the Lord. I knew that, with Him, my children and I could get through anything. My faith became unshakable.
When my daughter came out of her 11-hour surgery, after having all the cancer removed, the doctors told me they had never seen anyone recover so quickly from such an intense procedure. The surgeon called it unexplainable, but I knew the truth:
It was God. It was prayer.
My Inspiration
I became deeply grounded in our home church. I started attending women’s events, retreats, and finally reading my Bible for the first time in my life.
During one of the women’s retreats, I had my first encounter with the Holy Spirit. It was the most exhilarating and peaceful experience I had ever felt.
An anonymous church member blessed me with sessions with Juliette, a life coach who had been guiding us that weekend. During that time, I began my journey of healing and self-love. I was privileged to work with her for two years, and when our sessions ended, I knew—my calling was to help other women the way she had helped me.
My Journey Led Me to CLI, my Texas Bible Study Opportunity.
I prayed, and the Lord led me to Christian Leaders Institute (CLI) to received my Texas Bible education online.
Without the free tuition offered by CLI, I wouldn’t have been able to continue my education due to the student loans I was still paying from my unfinished university degree. CLI became an answer to prayer.
My Hope and Prayer
I want to give back.
I want to reach women struggling with addiction—women who have lost hope.
I want to share my testimony and show others what God has done in my life—because He can and will do it for anyonewho calls on Him.
I believe everyone deserves hope and a chance to overcome the battles they face. God never intended for us to judgethose we don’t understand—their stories, their struggles.
Too many people live in shame and guilt, believing they are beyond redemption. Sometimes, all it takes is one testimony to remind them:
God is still writing their story.
